Understanding Medical Compression Therapy in Australia
Medical compression stockings are classified therapeutic devices that apply graduated pressure to the legs, with the highest compression at the ankle that gradually decreases towards the thigh. This graduated compression design assists venous return, reduces venous pressure and helps prevent blood pooling in the lower extremities. In Australia, compression garments are available in multiple classes following international RAL standards.
Compression Classes Explained
Class 1 (15–20 mmHg): Suitable for mild varicose veins, tired and aching legs, minor ankle swelling and preventative use during long-haul travel. Often recommended as a first-line conservative therapy by Australian GPs.
Class 2 (20–30 mmHg): The most commonly prescribed medical compression level in Australia. Indicated for moderate varicose veins, post-sclerotherapy, pregnancy-related venous insufficiency, mild oedema and DVT prevention after surgery.
Class 3 (30–40 mmHg): Prescribed for severe chronic venous insufficiency, active venous ulceration, post-thrombotic syndrome and moderate to severe lymphoedema. Typically requires a medical prescription and professional fitting.
How Long Should I Wear Compression Stockings Each Day?
Most clinicians recommend wearing medical compression stockings throughout waking hours, typically 8 to 14 hours per day. Put them on first thing in the morning before your legs begin to swell, and remove them before bed. For specific conditions such as lymphoedema or post-surgical recovery, your treating practitioner may recommend different wear schedules.
Caring for Your Compression Garments
To maintain the therapeutic compression level and extend garment life, hand wash or machine wash on a gentle cycle (30°C) with mild detergent. Avoid fabric softeners, bleach and tumble drying, as these degrade the elastic fibres. Air dry flat away from direct heat and sunlight. Most medical-grade garments maintain their compression properties for approximately 6 months with daily wear and proper care.
Are Compression Stockings Covered by Medicare or Private Health Insurance?
In Australia, medical-grade compression garments may be partially covered by private health insurance under certain ancillary or extras policies. Some DVA (Department of Veterans' Affairs) cardholders may also be eligible for assistance. We recommend checking with your specific insurer regarding coverage for prescribed compression therapy. CSO provides itemised tax invoices suitable for insurance claims and health fund rebates.
When Should I Replace My Compression Stockings?
Medical compression garments should be replaced every 3 to 6 months depending on frequency of use. Signs that indicate replacement is needed include visible loss of elasticity, sagging at the ankle, pilling of fabric, or the garments feeling noticeably looser than when new. Rotating between two pairs can extend individual garment life while ensuring continuous therapeutic benefit.
